This is Pop Tarot.

Pop Tarot is a newsletter fusing tarot and pop culture. Tarot and pop culture might seem pretty far away from each other— magic and a Hollywood executive’s office aren’t the first things I’d pair up— but both use storytelling to ask us to think critically about ourselves and about the world around us. I take pop culture as seriously as cards, and cards as seriously as pop culture. Any tools we can use to understand ourselves are beautiful.

This newsletter will be a deep dive on each of the 78 tarot cards through the lens of music and one or more scenes, characters, settings &c from TV, movies, books— you get the drift. I’ll try to keep it as spoiler free as possible, but when there is one, I’ll let you know. I hope you’ll learn more about the cards and find a cool thing or two to listen to, watch, or read.

Pop Tarot updates on Mondays and Fridays. On Mondays, I’ll talk use song lyrics as an entry point to talk about the meaning of a card. On Fridays, I’ll analyze a piece of media (mainly TV) using that card as a lens. Sometimes on Wednesdays, there will be guest posts!

You can follow @PopTarotCards on Twitter for updates about when and where I’ll be reading in and around NYC and for specials on my online readings. You can purchase readings and learn more about my tarot and oral history practices at jamiebeckenstein.com.

If you like Pop Tarot, please tell your lovers/ mentors/ nemeses to subscribe. And if you’ve got extra $$ and want to help a disabled transsexual pay rent, my venmo is @james0ctober.

Welcome aboard, nerds.
